Stainless steel stud bolts are widely used where corrosion resistance, reliable thread engagement and flexible assembly are required. They are purchased by machinery manufacturers, piping contractors, construction companies, maintenance teams and fastener distributors for equipment, flange connections, structural assemblies and custom fabrication.

What Is a Stainless Steel Stud Bolt?
A stud bolt is a headless fastener with external threads. Depending on the design, it may be threaded along its full length or have threaded sections at both ends with a plain shank in the center. Nuts can be fitted to one or both ends, or one end can be installed into a tapped component.
The supplied image shows both double end stud bolts and fully threaded studs. Double end studs are useful when a plain center section is required for positioning, alignment or controlled thread engagement. Fully threaded studs provide greater flexibility when the installed length must be adjusted.
Common Stud Bolt Types
- Double end stud bolts: threaded at both ends with an unthreaded center section.
- Fully threaded studs: continuous thread along the entire length.
- Tap end studs: one end is designed for installation into a tapped hole while the other receives a nut.
- Flange stud bolts: normally used with heavy hex nuts for piping, valves and pressure-containing connections.
- Custom studs: manufactured to drawings with special thread lengths, pitches, center sections or end features.
304 and 316 Stainless Steel
304 stainless steel is a common choice for general industrial equipment, food-processing machinery, architectural assemblies and indoor or moderately corrosive environments. It offers a useful combination of corrosion resistance, availability and appearance.
316 stainless steel contains molybdenum and is often selected for marine, coastal, chemical-processing and chloride-exposed environments. Material selection should consider temperature, chemicals, moisture, required mechanical properties and the material of the mating nuts and components.
For pressure piping, high-temperature service or regulated equipment, buyers should specify the exact material standard, grade, class, heat treatment and certification requirements. A general description such as “stainless steel” is not sufficient for safety-critical orders.
Sizes, Threads and Dimensions
Metric stainless steel stud bolts are commonly supplied from M6 through M36 and larger sizes, while imperial products may use UNC, UNF or project-specific thread series. Available sizes depend on material grade, manufacturing process and order quantity.
- Metric or imperial thread system
- Nominal diameter and thread pitch
- Overall length
- Thread length at each end
- Plain center-section length and diameter
- Thread tolerance and fit
- Required nuts, washers and assembly components
Double end studs should not be ordered by overall length alone. The threaded length on each end and the usable plain section must match the assembly drawing. Buyers should also state whether length is measured end-to-end and whether chamfers or special end points are required.
Typical Applications
- Machinery and equipment assembly
- Pump, valve and pipeline flange connections
- Marine and coastal construction
- Chemical and food-processing equipment
- Automotive and agricultural machinery
- Steel structures and industrial supports
- Maintenance replacement and OEM production
Preventing Thread Galling
Stainless steel threaded fasteners can gall when mating surfaces seize during tightening. The risk increases with high installation speed, excessive friction, damaged threads or unsuitable nut-and-stud combinations. Keep threads clean, avoid impact tightening unless the procedure permits it, and use an approved lubricant or anti-seize compound when specified by the project engineer.
Torque values depend on diameter, pitch, material grade, lubrication, nut type and required preload. Do not apply generic carbon-steel torque values to stainless steel assemblies without verification.
Quality Inspection Points
- Material grade and chemical-composition verification
- Thread gauge inspection for diameter, pitch and tolerance
- Overall length and thread-length measurement
- Straightness, chamfer and surface-finish inspection
- Mechanical-property testing when specified
- Heat number, marking and certificate traceability
- Packaging protection to prevent thread damage and contamination
Bulk Buying Checklist for Importers
A detailed RFQ helps the manufacturer provide accurate pricing and avoid production delays. Include:
- Stud type: double end, fully threaded, tap end or flange stud
- Drawing, standard or dimensional table
- Thread size, pitch, total length and thread lengths
- 304, 316 or another specified stainless steel grade
- Mechanical-property and certification requirements
- Nut, washer and packaging requirements
- Quantity per size, annual volume and destination port
SHENHUI supplies standard and custom fasteners for international distributors and project buyers. Stainless steel studs can be sourced together with hex nuts, washers, threaded rods and industrial bolts. OEM dimensions, markings, packaging and mixed-size orders can be reviewed according to drawings and quantity.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a stud bolt and a threaded rod?
A stud bolt is normally cut to a defined assembly length and may have special thread lengths or a plain center section. Threaded rod is usually supplied in longer fully threaded lengths for cutting or general fastening.
What is a double end stud bolt?
A double end stud has threads at both ends and a smooth unthreaded section between them. One end may screw into a component while the other receives a nut.
Should I choose 304 or 316 stainless steel?
304 is suitable for many general industrial applications. 316 is commonly preferred for marine, coastal and chloride-exposed environments. Final selection must also consider strength, temperature and chemical exposure.
Can SHENHUI manufacture custom stud bolts?
Custom diameters, pitches, overall lengths, thread lengths, center sections, materials, markings and export packaging can be evaluated from drawings, samples and order quantities.
