Stainless Steel U-Bolts: Sizes, Grades and Buying Guide

Stainless steel U-bolts are widely used to clamp round pipe, conduit, tubing and structural components where moisture, chemicals or outdoor exposure can cause ordinary carbon-steel fasteners to corrode. For distributors, contractors and industrial buyers, selecting the correct U-bolt is not only a matter of thread diameter. The inside width, inside height, bend radius, thread length, stainless grade and mating hardware must all match the installation.

What Is a Stainless Steel U-Bolt?

A U-bolt is a bent rod with threads on both ends. The round-bend version shown here wraps around circular pipe or tube and is normally secured with two nuts, washers or a support plate. It can hold a pipe against a channel, beam, bracket or equipment frame. Stainless steel provides a clean finish and useful corrosion resistance without an additional zinc coating.

Round U-bolts should not be confused with square U-bolts. Round bends suit pipe and cylindrical components, while square bends are normally selected for rectangular frames, box sections and some mechanical assemblies. Buyers should specify the required shape before confirming an order.

Common Applications

  • Pipe supports: securing water, process and utility pipe to brackets or structural steel.
  • HVAC and MEP installations: mounting conduit, duct accessories, cable supports and service lines.
  • Marine and coastal projects: fastening exposed components where salt and humidity demand improved corrosion resistance.
  • Food and light chemical equipment: supporting pipework and frames where a clean, corrosion-resistant surface is preferred.
  • Automotive and exhaust systems: clamping tubular parts, subject to design temperature and engineering requirements.
  • Construction and machinery: fixing posts, guards, brackets and round structural members.

304 vs 316 Stainless Steel U-Bolts

Material optionTypical environmentBuyer consideration
304 / A2 stainless steelIndoor, general outdoor and many industrial applicationsGood general corrosion resistance and economical for common projects
316 / A4 stainless steelCoastal, marine, chloride or more aggressive environmentsAdded molybdenum improves resistance to pitting and chloride exposure
316L stainless steelFabricated or welded assemblies requiring low carbon contentOften specified where welding and corrosion performance are important

The correct grade depends on the real service environment, temperature, chemical exposure and project specification. The photograph alone cannot confirm a stainless grade. Material certificates, drawings and purchase specifications should be used when grade traceability is required.

How to Specify U-Bolt Dimensions

Accurate dimensions prevent installation delays. A complete enquiry should normally include:

  1. Thread diameter and pitch, such as a metric coarse or fine thread.
  2. Inside width, measured between the two legs.
  3. Inside height, measured from the inside of the bend to the end or required reference point.
  4. Thread length on each leg.
  5. Bend radius or matching pipe outside diameter.
  6. Material grade, including 304, 316 or another specified alloy.
  7. Required nuts, washers and plate, if they must be supplied as a set.

Do not order only by nominal pipe size, because pipe outside diameters can vary by standard and schedule. A drawing, approved sample or exact pipe OD is the safest reference for custom production.

Surface Finish and Corrosion Considerations

Stainless U-bolts may be supplied with a plain, polished or passivated surface depending on the project. Passivation can help remove free iron contamination from manufacturing and restore the protective chromium-rich surface. For visible installations, buyers should also state the expected appearance and allowable tool marks.

Stainless steel is corrosion resistant, not corrosion proof. Crevices under plates, trapped moisture and contact with dissimilar metals may still create corrosion risks. Isolation washers, compatible supports and correct drainage may be required by the project engineer. Matching stainless nuts and washers also help avoid an unsuitable mixed-metal assembly.

Inspection Points for Bulk Orders

  • Verify material grade and certificate requirements before production.
  • Check thread with suitable GO/NO-GO gauges.
  • Measure inside width, inside height, leg parallelism and thread length.
  • Inspect the bend for cracking, flattening or excessive deformation.
  • Confirm nuts run freely without cross-threading or severe galling.
  • Review surface cleanliness, marking, packing and salt-exposure requirements.

Stainless threads can gall when tightened. Correct lubrication, compatible nuts and a controlled installation procedure may be necessary. Tightening torque and load capacity must be determined from the grade, thread, lubrication condition and engineered joint design; a generic torque value should not be applied to every U-bolt.

Standard and Custom U-Bolt Supply

SHENHUI supplies industrial fasteners for distributors, contractors, HVAC and MEP companies, pipe-support fabricators and construction projects. Standard sizes can be quoted for bulk purchasing, while custom inside width, leg length, thread length, material and packing can be produced from a confirmed drawing. OEM packaging, inspection documents and export packing can also be discussed for repeat orders.

For a faster quotation, send the thread size, inside width, inside height, stainless grade, quantity, required nuts or plates, destination and any drawing or applicable standard. You can also review our bolt range, industrial nuts, washers and OEM fastener services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are stainless steel U-bolts suitable for outdoor pipe supports?

Yes. 304 stainless steel is often suitable for general outdoor use, while 316 is commonly preferred for coastal, marine or chloride-exposed locations. The final grade should follow the project environment and engineering specification.

How do I measure a round U-bolt?

Specify the thread diameter and pitch, inside width, inside height, thread length and bend radius or matching pipe outside diameter. A dimensioned drawing is recommended for custom parts.

Can stainless U-bolts be supplied with nuts, washers and plates?

Yes. Matching nuts, flat washers and support plates can be supplied when their material and dimensions are included in the enquiry.

Can SHENHUI manufacture custom sizes?

Yes. Custom dimensions, thread lengths, stainless grades, finishes and packing can be quoted from an approved drawing or sample, subject to quantity and production review.
